Gandini, former member of the Communist Party and Trade Unionist, describes his family background and his introduction to the Communist Party, he discusses the ideology of the Party, its changes over time and the development of his own thoughts on communism. He also talks about the Eureka Youth League and other related groups. Gandini talks in detail about his travels to the Soviet Union and China as well as relations between Australian communists and the international communist movement. He also reflects on the reasons for the decline and failure of communism. A number of industrial and Trades and Labor Council issues are also dealt with, including the Robe River dispute and the trend to union amalgamation.

John Gandini was a member of the Australian Communist Party from the 1940's to 1983. From 1983-1993 he belonged to the Electrical Trades Union and was President of the Trades and Labor Council of Western Australia from 1988 to 1994.
