Xie started working as sailor in the 1940s which brought him to Sydney in 1941. He describes the difficulties on board, for the Australian authorities did not allow the Chinese to disembark. During the war, uncertainty was prevalent, and Xie states that even after he was allowed to disembark, it was unclear whether he would be granted residency. However he lived in Australia from 1942.His anecdotes first illustrate his efforts to learn English, and how people insulted and made fun of him. He states that Australians love their freedom; they value their own privacy and expect others not to intrude on their privacy. Australians are portrayed as refined-disliking wickedness. The writer states that once he understood Australians, he lived a much happier and freer life. On the whole, he met nice as well as obnoxious Australians.
