The collection focuses on the development of boxing from the introduction of gloved fighting in 1884 through to the late 1920s, with occasional photographs from later periods. It contains portrait photographs of many Australian boxers, and some overseas boxers who fought in Australia, mostly in boxing poses, including: Les Darcy; Jerry Jerome; the first Aboriginal Australian to win an Australian championship; Albert 'Griffo' Griffiths, Australian featherweight champion; William 'Billy' Miller, 1883; Snowy Baker; Mick Dooley; Larry Foley; Abe Hicken; Bert Spargo 1921-22; George Dawson; and Joe Goddard, 1890. The earliest item is a watercolour portrait of Larry Foley, painted in 1877. In addition to portraits, the collection contains photographs of interior scenes showing boxing rings and audiences, mainly in Melbourne and Sydney, but some in other cities such as Townsville and Bendigo. The photographs document some of the social history surrounding Australian boxing, such as the involvement of the Catholic Church. The racial aspects of boxing are also documented in photographs of Aboriginal boxers, and of the match between Tom Burns and black American Jack Johnson, whose fight in Sydney in 1908, the first world championship in which a black man beat a white man, caused riots when reported in the United States.
