Jack Johnson, American boxer, challenged Tommy Burns (Noah Brusso) the reigning World Heavyweight Champion Champion in a bout promoted by Hugh McIntosh of Sydney who was also the referee, for £7,500 which was the greatest sum ever offered to a fighter at that time. This was also the first time a black man was allowed to fight for the World Heavyweight Championship.
