Ellis Luciano Silas (1885-1972) was born in London. His father was an artist and designer and his mother an opera singer. He studied art under Walter Sickert. He migrated to Australia in 1907 and settled in Perth. He joined the AIF in 1914 as a signaller. He was at Gallipoli and constant exposure to heavy fire there caused him to suffer from neurasthenia or shell-shock which eventually led to his discharge. Silas was one of the few artists who recorded sketches and paintings of his first-hand experiences of the Australian participation at Gallipoli. In 1921 Silas returned to Australia and lived in Sydney where he worked as a commercial artist designing posters, cartoons, illustrated books and painted commissioned works to hang on ocean liners.
