Academic and agricultural scientist. Ernest Gordon Hallsworth was born in Manchester, England in 1913 and attended the University of Leeds graduating with first class Honours in chemistry and, subsequently, a Doctor of Science degree. Hallsworth filled academic posts in both England and Australia where, in the 1940s, he was a lecturer at the University of Sydney. In 1964 Hallsworth moved permanently to Australia to become Chief of the CSIRO Division of Soils, 1964-1973. During this time, in 1971, he was Australia's Chief Scientific Liaison Officer in London. In 1973 Hallsworth was made Chairman of the CSIRO Land Research Laboratories and he served in this capacity until his retirement in 1978.
Hallsworth was appointed to a number of national and international scientific advisory bodies during his career and from 1964 until 1968 he was President of the International Society of Soil Science. He was also Scientific Adviser to Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser and Australia's first representative on the OECD Committee on Science Policy. Hallsworth wrote or edited many scientific publications including, Catalogue of Australian land resource surveys (with J. Archibald, 1978). In retirement he published, Anatomy, physiology and psychology of erosion (1987). Hallsworth died in 2002.
