Dancer and dance educator. Johanna (Hanny) Exiner (née Kolm) was born in Vienna where she studied dance with Gertrud Bodenwieser and, at the age of 19, joined Bodenwieser's company, touring in Europe, South Africa and South America. Exiner settled in Australia and there toured with the Bodenwieser company before joining Daisy Pirnitzer's Studio of Creative Dance in Melbourne. In 1953, Exiner established the Modern Ballet Group with Margaret Lasica as co-director. She developed an interest in child education, completed teacher training and then joined the staff of the Melbourne Kindergarten Teachers College where, with colleague Phyllis Lloyd, she established the Graduate Diploma of Music and Dance. Exiner became a key innovator and influence in the development of dance-movement therapy in Australia. After her retirement from work in higher education in 1982, she opened the George Street Studio for Dance and Well-being offering community classes. Exiner died in Melbourne in 2006. The Hanny Exiner Memorial Foundation, established in 2001 as the Hanny Exiner Fund, provides grants for research in dance-movement therapy and presents an annual reward for work that advances the field of dance-movement therapy.
