The papers comprise family letters, general correspondence, a long series of detailed diaries (1880-1927), notebooks, newspaper cuttings, photographs, essays, lectures, speeches and publications. They relate in particular to Glynn's career in South Australian and Federal politics, his strong interest in Irish affairs and English and Irish literature, his involvement in the Federation movement, and his long concern with the Murray Waters question. Correspondents include Edward W. Bramble, Sir Albert Gould, J.W. Hamilton, Father Callistus Henry, Father Charles Jerger, Sir George Pearce and Edward J. Russell.

Patrick McMahon Glynn was born in Ireland in 1855, and educated at Trinity College, Dublin. He arrived in Australia in 1880. From 1887-1889 he was the M.P. for Light; in 1895 and again in 1897 he was elected M.P. for North Adelaide. In 1899 he became Attorney-General. He was elected for South Australia to the first House of Representatives in 1901, and in 1903 for the district of Angas, which he represented until the general elections in 1919. From June 1909 to April 1910 he was Attorney-General; from June 1913 to September 1914 Minister for External Affairs; from 1917 to 1920 Minister for Home and Territories. He made a special study of Constitutional Law, and wrote numerous publications on law and literature. He died in 1931.
