- Military map of the country between the city of Cawnpoor [i.e. Kanpur] and the city of Lucknow. The map shows two roads connecting Lucknow and Cawnpoor to facilitate British troop movement. Note that distances are measured from the British Residency inside Lucknow which was besieged by the Indian mutineers from July 1st 1857 and remained so until March 1858. It was Sir Henry Havelock's force of 3,000 troops which first relieved the besieged British outpost by fighting their way from Cawnpoor to Lucknow in September. Later in November, Sir Colin Campbell's troops provided a second relief in November before moving off again to retake Cawnpoor from the rebel forces of Nana Sahib and Tantia Tope. Campbell was successful on 6th December 1857, finally defeating the rebel leaders at Cawnpoor. He returned to Lucknow in March 1858 to liberate the British Residency.
