These mortuary temples were built by the great Pharaohs as temples for the worship of the soul of the departed. There was an avenue of Sphinxes leading from the temple to the edge of the Nile. These have all disappeared. The Statues have been badly mutilated. But in spite of this and times ravaging hand, what is left inspires wonderment and awe in the beholder.".
