- Biography/History:
-
Gertrud Bodenwieser (3 February 1890 - 10 November 1959), also known as "Gertrude", was a dancer, choreographer, dance teacher and pioneer of expressive dance. Prior to World War Two, she fled with a handful of students to Colombia in 1938, and eventually settled in Australia. In Sydney, she taught dance and founded the Bodenwieser Ballet. The Bodenwieser Ballet did not endure after Bodenwieser's death in 1959 although her legacy continues through her Australian dancers who set up schools across Australia to teach her particular style of expressive dancing. Her teaching has produced some of the most important choreographers and dancers of Australia, including Anita Ardell, Keith Bain and Margaret Chapple.
