William Scott Herbert (1920-1975) was a tenor known for the technical qualities of his singing in opera and in concert. He first performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Broadcasting Commision's orchestras. After moving to London in 1947, he appeared at a promenade concert at the Albert Hall, and was engaged by the British Broadcasting Corporation. He participated in the inaugural concert at the Royal Festival Hall in 1951. He appeared frequently at the Three Choirs and the Edinburgh festivals. In 1953 he was a soloist at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and in 1958 he was one of four singers from Britain chosen to take part in a concert to celebrate the United Nations in Geneva. He toured Australia for the A.B.C. in 1950, 1956 and 1959 before returning in 1963 to become lecturer in voice at the University of Western Australia. In 1965 Herbert moved to the new Canberra School of Music as lecturer in voice, and then conducted the Australian National University Choral Society, performed as soloist with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, and as a recitalist.
