Elsie Jean Morison was an Australian soprano who was born in Ballarat, Victoria on the 15th of August 1924. She studied at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and at the Royal College of Music, and burst on to the postwar musical scene in London with stunning performances in concert and opera. She made her English concert debut at the Royal Albert Hall in 1948, and is remembered for her roles in some of the most important musical events of the day, including the English premiere of Poulenc's Les Dialogues des Carmelites in 1958, alongside the young Joan Sutherland. She became well known for her recordings of her work. She married the great Czech conductor Rafael Kubelik in 1963. She died in Prague on April 5, aged 91.
