Harry Giese AM OBE, 1913-2000, was born in Western Australia, a descendant of a family who migrated to Australia in the 1870s. In 1954, after senior Public Service jobs in WA and Queensland, he moved to Darwin as the first Director of Welfare in the Northern Territory Administration. Among his duties was responsibility for the Territory's Aboriginal population (numbering around 20,000 as recorded in a census begun in the 1950s). After Cyclone Tracy in 1974, he headed the Darwin Disaster Welfare Council. In 1978, he became the first Ombudsman for the Northern Territory. He was the longest-serving official member of the NT Legislative Council (1954-73). He was founding Chairman of the Territory committee of the Menzies Foundation and instrumental in the setting up of the Menzies School of Health Research in 1985. He served on its Board of Governors, including as Deputy Chairman, from 1985-95.
