Lionel Cox won a gold medal in the 2,000m tandem event at Helsinki when he teamed up with fellow Australian cyclist Russell Mockridge. The win was particularly significant because Cox had never ridden a tandem before. This photograph shows him competing in a solo event, possibly the 1,000m sprint or the 1,000m time trial. At the Helsinki games Cox won the silver medal for the 1,000m sprint. The gold medal for the 1,000m time trial was won by Mockridge.
