Academic and art historian. Eleanor Joan Kerr (née Lyndon) was born in Sydney in 1938 and attended Somerville House in Brisbane and the University of Queensland where she studied English. In 1960 she married James Kerr. Kerr developed an interest in art history and enrolled at the University of York where she undertook doctoral studies with a thesis titled "Church architecture in New South Wales 1788-1888". Drawing on her thesis, Kerr published Gothick taste in the colony of New South Wales, in collaboration with James Broadbent, in 1980. The book she wrote with Hugh Falkus in 1982, From Sydney Cove to Duntroon: a family album of early life in Australia, reflected her interest in amateur and women artists in 19th century Australia. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the Australian National University Kerr moved to the Fine Arts Department at the University of Sydney in 1981 where she was later appointed Head of Department.
In 1992 Kerr published The dictionary of Australian artists: painters, sketchers, photographers and engravers to 1870, and Heritage: the national women's art book, 500 works by 500 Australian women artists from colonial times to 1955, in 1995. Kerr was research fellow in art history at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales from 1994 to 1997, and research professor at the Centre for Cross-Cultural Research at ANU from 1997 to 2001. She was a foundation member of the Society of Architectural Historians of Australia and New Zealand. During the 1990s Kerr was a trustee of the Historic Houses Trust of NSW and a member of the National Portrait Gallery advisory committee. In 2001 she was awarded the Centenary Medal for service to Australian society and the humanities in the study of Australian arts. Kerr died on 22 February, 2004.
