- Summary:
-
Article with accompanying wood engraving depicting the death of Cook in Hawaii, possibly the earliest description and depiction of Cook's death and possibly one of the earliest depictions of Hawaii. The death of Cook is shown in a manner that corresponds approximately to the actual events as reported in the Kamchatka despatches with the ships standing off shore, a longboat between them and the beach and the sailors firing on the group of natives who have isolated Cook and are clubbing him to death. Eight key letters in the wood-engraving refer to a list on the verso that identified Cook, the Resolution and the Discovery, the groups of British and Hawaiians and the native chief. Apparently unrecorded probably published in the Messager boiteux an almanac from Berne or Basle.
