Colonel Sir Henry Abel Smith was born on 8 March 1900 in London, England. He was the son of Francis Abel Smith and Madeline St. Maur Seymour. He married May Helen Emma Cambridge, Princess of Teck, daughter of Maj.-Gen. Sir Alexander Augustus Frederick William Alfred George Cambridge, 1st Earl of Athlone and Alice Mary Victoria Augusta Pauline Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Princess of Albany, on 23 October 1931 in St. Mary's Church, Balcombe, Sussex, England. He died on 24 January 1993 at age 92 in Wellington Lodge, Winkfield, Berkshire, England.
