"Nessie & Norman were married in the tiny weatherboard Presbyterian Church perched on a sandhill outside the small township of Piangil, in NW Victoria. Norman's sister Olive Hackett was Nessie's bridesmaid. 1929 was a drought year and on the 20 June they were married in a Mallee duststorm. Nessie was later to recall: " ... on our wedding day the sun looked like a gold sixpence through the dust." Nessie & Norman's wedding reception was held at 'Milleu', the Lockhart family home at Goodnight. The following day the couple travelled by train from Swan Hill to Melbourne. Their wedding photograph was taken in Melbourne ca. 3 days after their marriage. They lived on and farmed their property 'Thistlebank' at Goodnight. Throughout her married life Nessie's nursing skills were constantly in demand in a relatively isolated rural community."--Notes from acquisition documentation.
"They were married by Rev. J. Eric Owen, a young newly appointed minister and was the first weeding Eric Owen performed in a lifetime of service in the Presbyterian Church in Victoria. He officiated at the weddings of several of the bribes who wore Nessie's veil including that of her daughter Jennifer and Barrie Hadlow 32 years later. Eric Owen's wife Molly and their 3 children lived with Nessie & Norman Hackett at 'Thistlebank' for nine months during 1942 when families were evacuated from Melbourne during WW1."--Notes from acquisition documentation.
