Forced to leave school at an early age and contribute to the family income by taking a job as a newspaper boy, Bill Snedden (above) had risen to power from humble beginnings. Following service with the Royal Australian Air Force in 1945, he obtained a law degree and entered federal Parliament in 1955. With the backing of Harold Holt, Snedden found favour with Sir Robert Menzies who appointed him Attorney-General in 1964. Snedden was elected to lead the Liberal Party following its defeat in the 1972 election under the leadership of Bill McMahon. An affable and well liked member of Parliament Snedden was regarded by his friends and enemies as a man of strong ideals and firm loyalties. Image courtesy of The Bulletin.
