D.W. 'Bill' Rogers talks about his parents and their family background; his father's war service; his parents' marriage; his siblings; the family's travels with his father's work; his education at Malvern Grammar and Geelong College, Vic.; his memories of his paternal grandparents; further on his father's war service; General Blamey; General Macarthur; enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on his 18th birthday; life in the AIF and his early training before being transferred to Brisbane and the HQ of Central Bureau and intelligence work; his move to Philippines (1945) and memories of the Japanese at this stage of the war; at the end of the war his decision to attend Melbourne University; his legal studies; doing his articles with Arthur Robinson and Co.; the move to rural law in Maffra (1951); meeting his future wife and their marriage; the decision to leave Maffra and return to Melbourne; the companies he worked for and the areas of law in which he worked.
Rogers discusses some of the cases he worked on; the companies on which boards he has served including the AMP; Plumrose; Woodside Petroleum; Vamgas; his move into directorships and away from legal work by the mid-1980s; some of the difficulties encountered; BHP; how Woodside provided the most satisfying part of his corporate life until retirement in 1999; Shell; some of the outstanding characters whom he met around board tables; the ways in which different companies handled their boards and business affairs; his role as Chancellor as Monash University and how that came about; his early role with the university and some subsequent incidents; the variety of philanthropic efforts that he has been involved in, including the Centenary of Federation celebrations in Victoria; working as a trustee of the Hecht and Danny Scott trusts; his interest in Aboriginal matters and education through the work of these trusts; his family; a recent journey to the Philippines, New Guinea and adjacent islands reminding him of his war service and the various stories connected to it.
