Elizabeth White (nee Wilson) arrived in Canberra from Melbourne as a young bride to Harold White, later appointed as the National Library of the National Library of Australia, 1947-70. She had been active in community service with remedial teaching of the young and with the Young Women's Christian Association but later her community service work turned more to provision for the elderly. She was a catalyst in the development of the Goodwin Retirement Village in Ainslie and with her family she funded and helped to plan the first of these retirement homes. She instigated the Thursday Club, now the Canberra Senior Citizens Club of Turner. She became a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1962 and later became a foundation member of the Australian Association of Gerontology.
