- Biography/History:
-
Architect, artist and author. William Hardy Wilson was a highly regarded twentieth century architect whose architectural commissions, mainly houses and small commercial buildings, were influenced by early Australian colonial architecture. Two of Wilson's best known house commissions were built in the suburbs of Sydney, "Eryldene" in Gordon, 1914, and "Purulia" in Wahroonga, 1916. Following a visit to China in 1921, Wilson became interested in an architectural style that combined oriental and western elements.
Wilson was also known as an artist whose artistic endeavour featured drawings of old colonial architecture. His work was included in the 1923 Exhibition of Australian Art at Burlington House, London. As an author, Wilson contributed to Art in Australia and other journals. In 1929 he published an autobiographical work, The dawn of a new civilization. His other published works include a fantasy, Yin Yang (1934), Old colonial architecture in New South Wales and Tasmania (1924), Collapse of civilization (1936), Grecian and Chinese architecture (1937), and, Kurrajong: sit-look-see (1954).
