The painting shows the expedition in armed conflict with the Aborigines at Bulloo where the Expedition members had constructed a stockade in defence. The drawing was a gift from the artist to Eliza Younghusband in 1861 prior to his joining the SA Burke Relief Expedition.
- Biography/History:

William Oswald Hodgkinson born in Warwick, England and first came to Australia in 1851 returning to England before returning to work for the Melbourne Age in 1859. On the 20th August 1860 Robert O'Hara Burke and William John Wills set out from Melbourne on the ill-fated expedition to reach the Gulf of Carpentaria, about 2,800 kilometres. The inland area was unexplored by Europeans. Hodgkinson left Melbourne to join the Burke & Wills Expedition on 10th September 1861 at Swan Hill as an assistant. He was a member of Wright's team travelling from Menindee to Bulloo. He briefly joined the Howitt led Victorian Relief Expedition when they reached Menindee and was later appointed McKinlay's second-in-command on the SA Burke Relief Expedition. Hodgkinson married Kate Robertson in Rockhampton, became the editor of the Rockhampton Morning Bulletin was a gold-field warden and politician. He died on the 23 July 1900.
