Arthur Barton was born in Quorn (S. Aust.) and moved to Sydney as a child. He volunteered for service in 1916. The war developed his drawing skills and laconic humour. After the war he attended the London School of Arts and then returned to Australia and worked in Brisbane as a signwriter. In 1935 he become resident artist at Luna Park until 1970. His entrance face of the late 1950s (the fifth expression) is based on Old King Cole. He also created the murals in Coney Island and other artworks scattered through the Park. He produced cartoons, comic strips and comic books most of which were not published and are now in the Stanton Library, North Sydney. His comic books combine the themes of the Australian outback and science fiction. He is regarded as one of Australia's finest exponents of fairground art.
