- Biography/History:

Academic, lawyer and author. Larissa Behrendt is professor of law and director of research at the Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning at the University of Technology, Sydney. Behrendt graduated as a Bachelor of Laws at the University of New South Wales in 1992, and travelled to the United States where she completed a Master of Laws at Harvard Law School in 1994, and a Doctor of Laws from the same institution in 1998. Behrendt is the author of Achieving social justice: Indigenous rights and Australia's future (2003), and, The Australian dream: Indigenous peoples in an Australian republic (2006), among other works on property law, dispute resolution and Aboriginal women's issues. For her novel, Home (2004) Behrendt won the 2002 David Unaipon Award and the 2005 Commonwealth Writers' Prize. She became a member of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) in 1998 and was appointed to the Institute's Research Advisory Council in 2000. Behrendt was named as 2009 NAIDOC Person of the Year.
