In 1861 Mitford claimed to be the original discoverer of the area described as Claim 1039. That area was known to hold rich copper deposits, and pre-existing claims to the area were soon asserted by other parties in court. The confusion was compounded by alleged surveying inconsistencies at the Survey Office. The claim was ultimately awarded in 1861 to Sir Walter Watson Hughes of Bald Hill who went on to form the Moonta Mining Company. Mitford continued to petitioned this award until 1869. This item appears to be one of three maps forming part of that petition [see other maps are nos. 17 & 18 and from the dates on these maps they were probably produced between 1866-1869].
- Notes:
-
- Map showing the northern part of Yorke Peninsula and featuring the town "Tipara" near modern day Tiparra Springs. It highlights a strip of land running from Reef Point to Point Riley in the north, a distance of 30 miles, then inland 10 miles east from Point Riley. This has been labelled Run 147 "laid down as per application", with a smaller irregular hexagonal shaped piece of land marked Run 85. Bald Hill is described in each of the runs, first by "Hughes" on "May 27", then on "June 5 1861". Note that the Moonta region includes Claim 1039 and to the north is the Wallaroo region.
- Note that Run 85 includes claims 930 and 981, and Run 147 includes claim 1039.
- Ink on paper.
