The land on which the township of Wallaroo stands was held by Walter Watson Hughes from 1857. The lease stretched from a point 3 km south of Point Riley, south-east beyond Kadina, then south to include Moonta, finally rejoining the coast at Tiparra Springs. Copper desposits were discovered near the site in 1859, and in 1862 Hughes laid out the township. Wallaroo's primary importance was based on its role as the major port for the vast copper deposits which were found and mined at Moonta.
- Notes:
-
- Map showing mineral claims in the region of Wallaroo, shown on map as "township" on coastline. "Sections marked red are the property of the company. Sections marked thus have copper lodes on them." Also features a second 'township', now modern-day Kadina. Also features mine names "Wiltilto", "Bingo", "Wombat", "Home" and "Mitta".
