In 1861 Mitford claimed to be the original discoverer of the area described as Claim 1039. That area was known to hold rich copper deposits, and pre-existing claims to the area were soon asserted by other parties in court. The confusion was compounded by alleged surveying inconsistencies at the Survey Office. The claim was ultimately awarded in 1861 to Sir Walter Watson Hughes of Bald Hill who went on to form the Moonta Mining Company. Mitford continued to petitioned this award until 1869. This item appears to be one of three maps forming part of that petition [see other maps are nos. 16 & 17 and from the dates on these maps they were probably produced between 1866-1869].
- Notes:
-
- Map showing the northern part of Yorke Peninsula and featuring "Tipara [Tiparra] Springs", "Nallyappa", Warburto Point and "Bald Hill of Hughes". Also features the position of Bald Hill as described on "May 25 1861" and as described elsewhere on "June 5 1861". Also features claims 930, 980 and 1039. The map is further annotated "Showing that the description of 1039 places that claim 5 miles west - northwest of every preceeding application" indicating that the author attributed to Mitford intended to use this map to demonstrate a deliberate shift of claim locations that disadvantaged his own claim but benefitted his disputants. Note that Mitford has corrected this map using dotted lines to demonstrate the real coastline, correcting the errors on the inital map.
