Macquarie Island was also frequently used as a stopping point by expeditions to Antarctica, some of them collecting plant and animal specimens. In 1911 (Sir) Douglas Mawson established a scientific base and radio relay station for the 1911-14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition to collect information on Macquarie Island's climate, geology, botany and zoology, and to make detailed maps. The station was maintained until 1914. A permanent scientific station was erected by the Australian Government in 1948. The Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition (ANARE) Station has been in operation ever since. Macquarie Island was listed as a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1933, a Conservation Area in 1971, upgraded to a State Reserve in 1972, renamed the Macquarie Island Nature Reserve in 1978 and listed as World Heritage Area in 1997.
