- Manuscript map of Macau. Described in the hand of J.M. Braga as a "Coloured map of Macao in 1557 (reconstitution by Eugenio Beca)", on accompanying sheet. In the absence of any cartographic record of the original Portuguese presence in Macau in 1557, Braga commissioned this small map to indicate the location of the first Portuguese occupation: the Fortim de S. Francisco [translates in English as St. Francis Fortress], commanding the entrance to a protected bay and anchorage. A much rebuilt wall of this small fort survives in the centre of the modern city of Macau. Beca has provided embellishments in the manner of 16th century cartography: an elaborate compass rose, a caravelle and the Portuguese royal coat of arms. Two flags are firmly planted in Macau to indicate that the Portuguese were here to stay. Relief shown by contours and gradient tints.
