Dr John Yu speaks of his early childhood memories including being smuggled out of besieged Nanking in a laundry basket; raising money for the War effort dressed in Chinese costume; visiting his grandparents' graves at Rookwood Cemetery; the history of his mother's family from Joshua Young Wai who came to the Victorian goldfields in 1867 and was later ordained a Presbyterian minister; how his mother went to Presbyterian Ladies College and his uncles to Scots College; how she and his father a Chinese govt. official met when he was visiting Australia and later married in China; how well he was raised in the family having much contact with adults for whom he and sister Betty sang and recited; his academic development at Fort Street High and then Sydney University following his uncle as the first Chinese medical graduate in Australia; why his uncle was breadwinner for his family; how he and his sister went to England on graduation.
Yu discusses his work at Hammersmith Hospital and providing medical checks at Australia House for potential migrants; some experience of racism; returning to Australia; becoming engaged in children's medicine and later at New Children's Hospital, Westmead; the advances in treating children; the role of the physical structure of the Hospital as integral to healing process; how his interest in art has grown; his plans following his imminent retirement.
