- Detailed and very carefully drawn map of Hong Kong island on architect's detail paper, showing coastal features, most high points, roads and streets. Relief shown by spot heights. The map is incomplete. The top left hand corner contains a list written in pencil of hospitals (13), schools (11), markets (7), police stations (6), churches (7), hotels (3), theatres (6), barracks (7), dockyards (2), factories (7), government quarters - i.e. buildings (9) and miscellaneous buildings (9). Each name is accompanied by a number, but the numbers do not appear on the map itself. It seems that the cartographer was given a list of buildings to include, but left this detail to be completed by another, as he was not familiar with the locations of places in Hong Kong, then under Japanese occupation. The map was probably prepared as part of a contingency plan put together in Macau during the last months of World War II for the re-establishment of government in Hong Kong in the event of a sudden and total Japanese collapse. The papers of the plan are located in Manuscripts Branch at MS 4300, series 8.
- Copy 4 is the original manuscript. Copies 1 to 3 are blueprints, probably produced in the event of sudden need by people who might be required to go to Hong Kong without notice.
- Oriented with north at bottom.
