- Summary:
-
In October, 1861 John McDouall Stuart left Adelaide to lead an expedition to cross the Australian continent from Adelaide in the south to the Indian Ocean in the north. Included in this party was Stephen King, a 19 year old surveyor. They succeeded in reaching the Indian Ocean on the 24th of July, 1862 but Stuart's health was declining and he had to be carried on a stretcher slung between 2 horses. By the time they reached Mount Margaret on the 26th of November he had recovered sufficiently to resume riding and the party reached Adelaide on 17 December, 1862. Included on the sheet is a second small drawing depicting a close view of the configuration of the stretcher, and the harness used to attach it to the horses.
