Alfred Cort Haddon was an influential British anthropologist and ethnologist. During 1898 and 1899 he led an expedition which conducted ethnographical research in the Torres Strait. The results were compiled in a series of volumes written by various contributors. The topics covered include: history, religion, legends, customs, folk lore and languages; physical characteristics of the people including vision and hearing; grammar and vocabulary; personal decorations, weapons, textiles, music and songs; myths, folk-tales, ceremonies, land tenure and trade; social organisation and social customs.
