The records in MS 7979 comprise early historical material, reports, brochures, cuttings, records relating to finances and appeals, photographs, Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) records, 1958-1988, including overseas tours, National Music Camp Association correspondence, 1953-1972, records on state camps, 1965-1980, numbered files, files on national music camps, 1954-1988, records on international camps, general administration records, 1973-1987, subject files, and other records (104 boxes).
The Acc03.041 instalment comprises brochures, programs, tour outlines, reports, Board papers, newsletters, a business plan, constitution, posters and CDs of photographs including photographic highlights of tours (4 cartons).
The Acc05.058 instalment consists of a scrapbook collated and owned by Ruth Alexander, one of the founders of the National Music Camps/AYO. It has been heavily used as a major source of historical information by the AYO (4 fol. boxes).
The Acc06.022 instalment includes correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes, financial records, photographs, Music Library loans registers, issues of Newsbeat, concert programs, tour schedules, handbooks, posters, brochures and press clippings, together with CD-ROMs containing digital photographs and other documents. The records concern the AYO in general, Australian Youth Orchestra seasons, National Music Camps, Young Australian Concert Artists, Young Symphonists, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra/AYO orchestral development and other AYO programs and events (7 boxes, 1 carton).
The Acc08.097 instalment comprises correspondence, including many letters to Ruth Alexander, photographs (mostly black and white), minutes, reports, financial records, ephemera such as application forms, concert programs, copies of journals containing articles on National Music Camp (3 boxes, 1 fol. box).
The Acc12.156 instalment comprises the 2009 Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) records including: AYO Board meetings background papers; AYO program booklets and fliers; AYO business plan; AYO strategic plan for 2009-2011; National Music Camp programs, schedules, handbooks, publicity material and issues of 'The daily bull'; and ephemera relating to Style Workshop, Young Australian Concert Artists, AYO seasons, fellowship and career development programs, Young Symphonists, the International Tour Fund and special events (2 archive boxes).
The Acc13.039 instalment comprises the 2011 and 2012 Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) records including: AYO Board meetings background papers; AYO program booklets and fliers; AYO business and strategic plans; National Music Camp programs, schedules, handbooks and publicity material; issues of 'Newsbeat'; and ephemera relating to Style Workshop, Chamber Players, Young Symphonists, AYO seasons, fellowship and career development programs, the Ernest V. Llewellyn Memorial Fund, Regional Residencies and special events (4 boxes, 1 map fol.).

The Australian Youth Orchestra is a non-profit organisation which organises each year a National Music Camp, a season of the Australian Youth Orchestra, and state and regional camps. The first camp was held at Point Lonsdale, Victoria, in 1948. The Australian Youth Orchestra was formed in 1957.
