Shen, an artist, speaks of his early life in Shanghai, China, how his disabled uncle first helped him with his painting and gave him some oil paintings when he was 18 because with the start of the Cultural Revolution all art schools were shut down; his view of the Cultural Revolution; how his painting of 1974 Protecting the Fatherland done in the Russian style was hung in the National Art Museum in Beijing and reproduced in numerous publications yet he held no copyright; how the painting was later altered by another painter following the Cultural Revolution; how he became a set designer for the Army's Opera Troupe while his father was imprisoned for a year; how in 1976 when the Gang of Four fell his famous painting was sent back to him damaged; how 15 years later the Guggenheim Museum (N.Y.) exhibited it after it was repaired in Sydney; how in 1979 artists were more liberally treated and Western art exhibitions began in Beijing.
Shen speaks about the controversy over his 1984 painting 'War Suffering' now in the Museum of the Chinese Revolution (Tiananmen Square, Beijing); how he created in 1987 Red Star over China during a political crisis; his first visit to Australia in 1989 & the impact of the Tiananmen Massacre (June, 1989); his wife and daughter joining him in 1990; how he began painiting oil portrait in 1991, such as his winning representation of Saint Mary McKillop.
