- Detailed street map of Liverpool, England's famous port city located 176 miles northwest of London. Includes tables of public buildings, parish offices, ecclesiastical divisions, municipal wards, reference to churches, schools, ferry boats, and facing across the Mersey the towns of Birkenhead and Wallasey. Note that the map also shows in blue the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (L&MR) which was the world's first inter-city passenger railway in which all the trains were timetabled and were hauled for most of the distance solely by steam locomotives. The line opened on 15 September 1830 and ran between the cities of Liverpool and Manchester in North West England in the United Kingdom. The tunnel was completed in 1836 and ran from Lime Street Station to Edge Hill Station covering just over a mile. Further south, the map shows also in blue an earlier tunnel which opened in 1829 that ran 1.26 mile (2.03 km) from Edge Hill Junction in the east of the city to the south end Liverpool docks emerging at Wapping. Though it was only being used for freight, the Wapping Tunnel is acknowledged as the first rail tunnel in the world bored under a metropolis.
