- Map extracted from: La Pérouse, Jean-François de Galaup, comte de, 1741-1788. Atlas du voyage de La Pérouse / dessine par J.M. Moreau le Jeune ; grave par Ph. Triere ; L. Aubert, scripsit. Paris : L'imprimerie de la République, 1797. Map no. 64.
- La Pérouse was appointed in 1785 by Louis XVI and his minister of marine, the Marquis de Castries, to lead an expedition around the world. Its aims were to complete the Pacific discoveries of James Cook (whom La Pérouse greatly admired), correct and complete maps of the area, establish trade contacts, open new maritime routes and enrich French science and scientific collections. The expedition continued to Tonga and then to Australia.
- Contact with Europeans began in the early 18th century. Jacob Roggeveen (1659-1729), a Dutchman, was the first known European to sight the Samoan islands in 1722. This visit was followed by a French explorer, Louis-Antoine de Bougainville (1729-1811), the man who named them the Navigator Islands in 1768.
