The Commonwealth Fund is a philanthropic foundation established by Anna M. Harkness in New York in 1918. The Commonwealth Fund Fellowships were initiated in 1925 to enable graduates from British and Dominion universities to study in the United States. They were renamed Harkness Fellowships in 1961 and were extended to cover fields of business, science, politics, creative arts and journalism. The Australian Nomination Committee was set up in 1953. The head office is in New York with offices in Canberra, Auckland and London. Its Australian representatives were H.C. Forster, L.T. Hinde and Roger Beale.
