In 1872 pastoralist William Hann led an expedition to Cape York Peninsula under instruction to search for gold and pastoral lands. For three weeks he entered and struggled through the dense rainforests between the Endeavour and Bloomfield Rivers in the vicinity of Cape Tribulation. Earlier in the expedtion he had assessed the land as suitable for development and colonisation, able to support cattle stations and goldfields. But his predominant concern was the hindering effect of rainforest on explorers and land developers. Hann compiled the official report of the expedition from his diary and notebooks.

-
- Map of Northern Queensland, principally the Cape York region, showing the tracks of Hann's Northern Expedition Party. Hann and his party and seven men included a surveyor, a botanist and an Aboriginal guide, left Fossilbrook Station on June 26, 1872. The party moved from the more open forests and plains and began passing intermittently through rainforest referred to in the official report as thick scrub and along steep ranges from camp 48 (26 September) to camp 64 (13 October) while in the vicinity of the Endeavour and Bloomfield Rivers. To find their way through the rainforest, the explorers often relied on an extensive network of trails and clearings made by Aboriginals. They made their last survey of the land on October 12. Hann's decision to turn back was primarily due to lack of passage for their horses. While dense scrub prevented them from reaching their goal on the Endeavour River, the party had located some fair pastoral country and discovered and named the Tate, Daintree and Palmer Rivers. Of the latter Hann reported traces of gold which led to James Mulligan's prospecting party and a dramatic gold rush. Relief is shown by hachures.
