- Biography/History:
-
The National Aboriginal Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA) was established in 1975 by Carole Johnson as the Aboriginal Islander Skills Development Scheme (AISDS) to train indigenous Australians in dance. It was incorporated in 1988 and became known as NAISDA. Based in Gosford's Mount Penang Gardens on the Central Coast of New South Wales, NAISDA is a registered training organisation offering training in dance skills from Australian indigenous dance (both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island) to classical ballet, modern dance, and associated dance subjects such as music. NAISDA was the subject of an ABC TV documentary "From dreamtime to dance" broadcast in 2002. The Aboriginal Islander Dance Theatre (AIDT), the first contemporary indigenous Australian dance company, was formed out of the professional development arm of NAISDA with Raymond D. Blanco as Australia's first indigenous artistic director. The Bangarra Dance Theatre also developed from NAISDA.
