Although Australian literature is not equal to the best of English literature, there are nevertheless valid reasons for its inclusion in the literature programs of austrailian schools. It is becoming increasingly important that Australians have some understanding of the emergence of the society and culture in which they live. Australian literature is an effective means of developing this historical sense, and can be, in turn, a significant aid in understanding the literature of remote countries and times. The study of Australian literature can also encourage students to inquire further into the "special value" of literature, for inferior literature is frequently the stimulus which leads students to better literature. Contemporary Australian literature has a particular immediacy and significance for students and can encourage writing, reading, and the kind of intellectual activity inherent in both. Examinations on such material, however, can destroy its value by stifling and conditioning students' responses to it. By including in English curricula Australian literature, particularly the works of contemporary Australian writers, teachers of English can play a significant role in creating an active, intelligent community interested in both its literary heritage and its writers of today. This article appeared in "English in Australia," number 5, August 1967. (dl)
