- Summary:

This is an interim report on the Drug Abuse Education Project, a three-year K-12 program designed primarily to train teachers and develop curriculum in the area of drug abuse. During the first year (1971-72), instructional units were developed at all grade levels by district teachers who had taken part in a training program that included a series of workshops in drug abuse education, followed by a graduate level course designed to prepare them to write drug abuse curriculum. The curriculum will eventually be made available to all elementary teachers as well as all secondary teachers in related subject areas such as Health and Biology. During the school year, 227 staff members attending a series of four-session workshops, screened numerous drug abuse instructional programs, and made presentations about the problems of drug abuse to civic groups. It is planned that, during 1972-73, there will be a continuing emphasis on teacher training, curriculum development and the offering of a training program for district counselors similar to a practicum in drug abuse counseling.
