Data from a longitudinal study of freshmen at three California community colleges is presented. This project, the 3-D Project, views freshmen in three colleges on the basis of a construct formulated by Brawer called Functional Potential. Functionsl Potential is a hypothetical construct built on psychodynamic principles which describe the degree to which a person is able to tolerate ambiguity, delay gratification, exhibit adaptive flexibility, demonstrate goal directness, relate to self and others, and have a clear sense of personal identity. Ss were 1876 community college freshmen, tested during their first week in school. A follow-up test was administered at the end of the second semester for students in the initial testing group who were still in school. Data collected included individual characteristics and demographic information and data regarding attitudes, feelings, values, and goals. Findings are discussed. (CK)
