This series consists of 1:250,000-scale charts designed to assist U.S. military personnel in survival, evasion, resistance and escape in combat areas. Developed by the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) for the Air Force Intelligence Service in 1990, these charts are a derivative of the standard DMA Joint Operations Graphic, which depicts details such as lakes, tributaries, and transportation routes that users can recognize while on foot. The charts are produced on spin-bonded olefin, a strong, moisture-resistant polyester material that does not stretch or crack and is not sensitive to temperature change. They can be used to catch drinking water, as shelter, as a bag to haul water or food, as a liner for a wash basin, as a ground cloth for sleeping, as protection for clothing while crossing streams, to splint broken bones, and to plug sucking chest wounds. The borders and background of the charts depict a camouflage pattern. The charts also provide survival data relevant to the geographic areas they represent, such as navigation and travel information, celestial navigation aids, climate data, lists and pictures of edible and poisonous plants and animals, food preparation instructions, suggestions for sources of water, first aid procedures, and descriptions of environmental hazards -- US National Archives catalogue record http://research.archives.gov/description/306076
