Robert Cox, born in Bulimba, Qld., discusses his birthmother, stepmother and father; his brothers; early memories of family life and poverty; wandering the streets; his treatment at school because of his appearance; truancy; playing sports; searching for his mother; the police deeming him a neglect child; being fed and otherwise assisted by neighbours; living on the streets; his relationship with police and familiarity with Brisbane's streets and city; survival skills; Aboriginal people who lived along the river; seeking an education; court proceedings and choosing to go to a boy's home; arriving at Westbrooke by police car; his first memories of Westbrook; his memories of the buildings and their layout; learning to fight; clothing; running away and being caught by police and returned; punishments and abuse; feeling unwilling to complain about his experiences at Westbrooke.
