- Summary:
-
The commitment of this nation to the development and maintenance of a reasonably educated society is well established. In the early part of the 1970's, muted criticisms of all types of affirmative action programs escalated into systematic and well-orchestrated attacks that threatened to undermine the few ameliorative programs functioning with a modicum of effectiveness. One important suit initiated on the allegation of reverse discrimination is that of Allan Bakke v. the Regents of the University of California. The purpose of the present discussion is to demonstrate the need for affirmative action or preferential admissions in higher education in general and in graduate and professional study specifically. Evidence is provided to support the position that every legal effort must be made to prevent the demise of such policies. (Author/MSE)
