- Summary:
-
This volume on foreign language teaching and learning concerns the following topics: lifelong learning, small-group learning, the minicourse, student attitudes toward foreign languages, problems in secondary schools, humanistic education, curricula in uncommonly taught languages, foreign languages in elementary and adolescent-centered education, continuing education for foreign language teachers, and research directions in the 1970s. The foreign language profession is characterized by the generation of many new ideas and innovations, but there is growing evidence that a significant number of language teachers have a negative impression of what is happening in the profession. What is needed is an evaluation and synthesis of the work of recent years in the development of new alternatives in theory and practice. Teachers need a better understanding of the relationships of many variables which occur in the teaching/learning process in the foreign language classroom. An integration of teaching and research and a model for education based on the concept of lifelong learning is suggested for the foreign language profession. The teacher as a professional needs to possess integrative skills and a viewpoint which recognizes the complexity of the growing body of knowledge in the field. (SW)
