Investigators agree that mothers employ a variety of request forms and that children seem to be able to respond to these forms with a remarkable degree of accuracy. It is suggested that the speech of mothers to their children is filled with requests which are really not requests at all. It is shown that many of what appear to be adult requests to children do not conform to the description of an adult speech act request. A speech act description of requests is given, and it is demonstrated that that description permits a more careful analysis of a mother's request to children than has been possible previously. The defective requests are categorized according to the different relationships of speaker, hearer, and action which existed when the utterances occurred. A functional explanation for specific defects which occur in mother's requests is proposed. (Author/NCR)
